Media Alert: ROBOT OVERLORDS – THE NOVEL!

Gollancz acquire novelisation of upcoming British science-fiction film with a high-profile cast

The eagerly-anticipated British independent film, ROBOT OVERLORDS, is due for release in early 2015

Gollancz, an imprint of the Orion Publishing Group, is thrilled to announce the acquisition of World Rights to publish the official novelisation. The fully authorised tie-in novel will be written by the scriptwriter and co-creator of the science-fiction movie, Mark Stay.

From Tempo Productions and Pinewood Pictures, ROBOT OVERLORDS stars Gillian Anderson (THE X-FILES), Ben Kingsley (IRON MAN 3) and Callan McAuliffe (THE GREAT GATSBY). The film is co-written by British script-writers Mark Stay and Jon Wright, and produced by Piers Tempest. With breath taking visual effects from the UK team Nvizible and stunning onset locations in the UK Isle of Man and Northern Ireland, ROBOT OVERLORDS is generating buzz across social media platforms months ahead of the film's release in early 2015.

The film follows a group of teenagers in the wake of Earth’s invasion by Robots, and their regime which confined the human survivors to their homes. No one knows why – or what they want. There is only one clear message: Robots never lie. Nor do they show mercy . . .

The novel targets a cross-over readership, particularly readers aged 9-14. Like the film, there will be edge-of-your-seat action from the very beginning, but the novelisation also includes extra scenes, bonus material for attentive readers and fans of the film, and illustrations.

Mark Stay, screenplay co-writer and author of the novelisation, said: ‘Piers, Jon and I talked about a book from the very beginning, and we’re huge fans of those classic 80’s movie tie-in novels. I couldn’t be more excited that Gollancz are the publishers. If you want the world to share in your fun, action and robot carnage, you go to the best SF publisher in the business.’

World rights were acquired by Gollancz Publishing Director, Gillian Redfearn, from Hilary Delamere of The Agency. The novel will be published as a B-format paperback with a movie tie-in cover to mark the film's release. Gollancz will utilise cross-promotional opportunities and the UK-based cast and locations to create a unique, enormously fun marketing campaign with unprecedented behind-the-scenes access.

Gollancz Publishing Director, Gillian Redfearn said: ‘I’m so delighted to work with Mark Stay as a novelist, on a project that we’ve had the fortune to watch develop from a glimmer in his eye to an incredible British film production. It’s genuinely exciting to work with such a great UK team, and to be publishing such a cracking story – one which might literally blow your socks off.’

Piers Tempest, the producer of ROBOT OVERLOARDS, said: ‘We are delighted to be partnering with Gollancz for the novelization which will really take the reader deeper into the world of the Robot Overlords.’

Short Fiction Friday: Selfies

Selfies by Lavie Tidhar "Selfies", by Lavie Tidhar, is a creepy little horror tale about the fate of a young woman who makes the mistake of a lifetime when she buys a new phone in the local mall. It is only a few weeks back that I read a different but very interesting short story of Lavie Tidhar, Dragonkin . I found this story directly to my liking, the synopsis and build up of the story was unique and got me excited by it's less is more writing style. In the end this story for me had so much going on that I hope to see Lavie Tidhar exploring it even further. That aside, now its time for Selfies . I think I can now safely say that Lavie Tidhar is an author to watch out for, his stories will get you thinking and will scare you twice over.  I have been thinking a lot of the current situation with always being connected on social media and the likes. It's unavoidable. One thing that is connected with all of this is of course your smartphone, yes no longer a cell

Guest Blog: Alien Invasion Stories from Armada to Grunt Traitor

Guest Blog: Alien Invasion Stories from Armada to Grunt Traitor  By Weston Ochse © 2015   There’s something at once terrifying and romantic about an invasion. One wrong move could mean the destruction of everything you know and love, but in the heat of battle, there are crystalline moments in which true humanity shines. Like many military authors, I often look to history for guidance on how to write the future. I’ve always looked at the Battle of Rorke’s Drift as the perfect sort of battle to represent an alien invasion. One hundred and fifty British soldiers in a remote outpost are beset by four thousand Zulu warriors. The odds seemed impossible, yet in the end the British won the day. The early Michael Cain movie Zulu retells this story and stands as one of my favorite military movies of all time. There are moments in the film that resonate. In the face of overwhelming attack, the sergeant major lowly commanding his men to take it easy. Right when everything seems los
